WSBR Names 2005 Scholarship Winners

Washington, D.C., September 10, 2005; The Board of Directors of the Washington Space Business Roundtable (WSBR) is pleased to announce the awarding of its 2005 scholarships of $5,000 each to: Daphne C. Dador and Renee Park

Daphne Dador is a M.A. Candidate for International Science & Technology Policy with a concentration on Space policy at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Dador's scholarship was used towards her participation in the International Space University (ISU) summer program held in Strasbourg, France. Of this experience she states, "I gained new skills and experiences which I couldn't have received anywhere else on the planet!"

Renee Park is a graduate of Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD and will be entering Princeton University this fall. Park was selected on the basis of a research paper entitled "Effects of Atmospheric Turbulence on Simulated Starlight in a Low-Pressure Telescope Environment". This was based on a study of the possibility of detecting extra-solar planets from within the stratosphere. This project was considered along with dozens of space and science entries submitted from the Greater Washington DC Metropolitan area to the International Science Engineering Fair (ISEF.)

Said WSBR Chair Roscoe Moore, "Our educational efforts are core to the mission of the Roundtable, and we are delighted to have found two such highly qualified scholarship recipients this year."

WSBR scholarship funds are raised and maintained through its annual spring "WSBR Flagship Lunch and Silent Auction, " chaired this year by Eric Stallmer, Director of Government Relations, Analytical Graphics, Inc. (AGI).

The WSBR Board of Directors unanimously agreed to award scholarships of $5,000 each to Dador and Park following the recommendations and review of WSBR Education Committee chair Jerry Howe, and review by Neal Anderson, VP Spacecraft Systems of DigitalGlobe.

Founded in 1985, the non-profit Washington Space Business Roundtable is dedicated to facilitating a dialogue on the economic and business aspects of the global space industry and stimulating an awareness of the impact that space-related business has on the Washington metropolitan area economy.

Additionally, WSBR supports educational opportunities for Washington-area youth, including scholarships, curriculum enrichment activities, and support of local school projects. WSBR works in cooperation with Science Services International and other organizations, believing that educational opportunities lead to a strong future workforce for the industry.
