Names 2002 Scholarship Winners
Washington, D.C.,
September 05, 2002; The Board of Directors of the Washington Space Business
Roundtable is pleased to announce it has selected two recipients for its
2002 scholarship awards: George F. Eichinger, III and David Schmitz.
Eichinger and
Schmitz, both graduating seniors from McLean High School in McLean, VA,
were selected as a team for their collaborative work a project entitled,
The Use of Electromagnetic Induction for the Propulsion of Mass.
Their project was considered along with dozens of space and science entries
submitted from the Greater Washington DC Metropolitan area to the International
Science Engineering Fair (ISEF), held this year in Louisville, Kentucky.
Over1,200 students participated in ISEF, competing for $4 million dollars
of funds and other donated awards.
Following review
and recommendation by the WSBR Education Committee, the WSBR Board of
Directors unanimously agreed to award scholarships of $2,600 each to Eichinger
and Schmitz for their freshman year of college. Both are planning to study
electrical and computer engineering - Schmitz at the University of Illinois
Urbana/Champlain and Eichinger at Virginia Tech.
WSBR recognizes
and thanks the following companies whose financial contributions made
its 2002 scholarship awards possible: AXA Space; The Boeing Company; Intelsat;
International Space Brokers; Lockheed Martin Corp. and Veridian.
Founded in 1985,
the non-profit Washington Space Business Roundtable is dedicated to facilitating
a dialogue on the economic and business aspects of the global space industry
and stimulating an awareness of the impact that space-related business
has on the Washington metropolitan area economy.
Additionally,
WSBR supports educational opportunities for Washington-area youth, including
scholarships, curriculum enrichment activities, and support of local school
projects. WSBR works in cooperation with Science Services International
and other organizations, believing that educational opportunities lead
to a strong future workforce for the industry.
